Generalized Monin Obukhov Similarity Theory for Complex Terrain and Canopies

Published in Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society (submitted to), 2024

By leveraging the anisotropy of tubulence, a new form of MOST scaling applicable in complex and flat terrain can be found. This work shows generalized MOST readily applies to canopies, and explores traditional and generalized MOST performance across a wide range of time, place, land cover, anisotropy, and complexity

Surface Flux Homogenization and its Impacts on Convection Across CONUS

Published in Journal of Hydrometeorology (submitted to), 2024

Homogenization of higher resolution surface fluxes when passed to the atmosphere, as common in many ESMs, is shown to cause large changes in precipitation in water limited regions of the United States in addition to yielding significant changes to mesoscale atmospheric flows

A Two-Column Model Parameterization for Subgrid Surface Heterogeneity Driven Circulations

Published in Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2024

When the circulations are parameterized, we see increased cloud development and realistic changes to the mean profiles of temperature and moisture. The proposed model qualitatively matches expectations from the literature and LES, and points to the potential success of its future implementation in coarse grid models.

Examining Parameterizations of Potential Temperature Variance Across Varied Landscapes for Use in Earth System Models

Published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2022

Earth system models (ESMs) and mesoscale models have come to employ increasingly complex parameterization schemes for the atmospheric boundary layer, requiring surface boundary conditions for numerous higher order turbulence statistics… … The National Ecological Observation Network is used here to evaluate existing parameterizations for the surface boundary of PTV, note key deficiencies, and explore possible remedies. The results indicate that existing schemes are acceptable over a variety of surface conditions …
